Forget Private Jets, The Saker S 1 Is A $5 Million Military Style Fighter Jet You Can Actually Buy

Years after initial development, Lockheed Martin's F-35 Lightning II finally appears to be on track to enter the US fighter fleet. But that doesn't mean the US Department of Defense isn't looking for alternative aircraft to supplement its fleets.

According to Defense News, the US Air Force has announced that it will begin testing aircraft that were not included in its inventory. After signing a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with Textron AirLand, the Air Force will begin a series of tests to determine whether Textron AirLand's flagship, called the Scorpion, will be airworthy.

"It's the first of its kind, we've never done a CRADA like this before, and we've never worked with industry to evaluate non-USAF-contracted aircraft," an Air Force spokesman told Defense News.

The Scorpion is a different animal compared to other aircraft on Earth. Starting with costs, Bill Anderson, president of Textron AirLand, said on Bloombergvideo:

"The goal was to create an aircraft suitable for today's security environment with procurement costs under $20 million and under $3,000 per hour," he said.

By comparison, a Predator unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) costs about $13 million and $1,500 per hour to operate, while one unit of a conventional F-35A costs $98 million and $42,200 per hour in 2015.

The Scorpion features a tandem pilot and composite airframe to reduce its weight and cost. In addition to its twin turbofan engines capable of a cruising speed of up to 517 mph, it has an interior cargo area capable of holding 3,000 pounds.

"It's quite maneuverable," said Scorpion test pilot Andy Vaughan. "It reminds me of my days flying the A-10 in the US Air Force."

From start to finish, the design of the Scorpion was kept secret to maintain a competitive edge. However, the secret did not last long. Textron AirLand was able to conduct tests shortly after the aircraft was built.

"In a classic DoD acquisition program, they can spend up to 10 years just designing and developing an aircraft, and we did it in less than two," Anderson said.

However, it is too early to say whether the Air Force move will also boost sales of Scorpion units in the US and abroad. According to Defense News, the program attracted only one potential customer.
